Anchors Away! Sailing Into Birthdays with the New June Release

Ahoy, crafty friends!

I am absolutely thrilled to share a brand new project featuring the gorgeous Rope Trellis Stencil from the highly anticipated A Colorful Life Designs June Release. If you love nautical themes, clean texturing, or creating high-impact masculine and birthday cards, this release is going to blow you away. Today’s card pairs an ink-blended background with a charming little sailor bird to create a playful, dimension-rich scene perfect for celebrating an amazing birthday!

Setting the Scene: The Rope Trellis Background

The absolute star of the background is the new Rope Trellis Stencil. When designing nautical cards, it can sometimes be challenging to build texture without cluttering the focal elements. This stencil strikes the perfect balance. I began by ink blending a soft, sky-blue base across the panel, leaving a subtle glow toward the center.

Once the base layer was set, I aligned the Rope Trellis Stencil over top and blended a warm, rich kraft-brown ink. The detail in this stencil is incredible—it perfectly mimics a rustic, twisted ship's rope. By running the trellis pattern edge-to-edge, it establishes an instant seafaring grid that frames the entire card beautifully, providing an immediate sense of movement and theme without needing an excess of layers.

Bringing It Together: The Sailor Bird & Wheel

To build upon the nautical backdrop, I brought in a fantastic die-cut ship’s steering wheel, cut from a dark chocolate cardstock to provide high contrast against the softer blue and tan background notes. Positioned at the bottom center, it grounds the card design completely.

Perched proudly right on top of the steering wheel is our adorable focal character: a die-cut sailor seagull! Dressed in his crisp blue-and-white striped shirt, a tiny red neckerchief, and a matching jaunty sailor cap, he brings instant whimsy and personality to the project.

The magic really happens in how the elements interact: the sweeping, diagonal curves of the Rope Trellis background perfectly play off the rigid, circular lines of the boat steering wheel. While the wheel brings structure, the rope patterns add a organic, flowing texture that makes the sailor bird look as though he's right out at sea on a clear day.

Finishing Touches & Sentiment

For the sentiment, I stamped "Anchors Away TO AN AMAZING BIRTHDAY" in VersaFine Clair Nocturne ink directly onto the upper right section of the stenciled panel. The bold, flowing script of "Anchors Away" perfectly complements the rope details, while the clean serif sub-text balances the clean lines of the card layout.

As a final bit of polish, I tucked a few translucent, shimmering clear droplets around the panel to simulate tiny splashes of ocean water catching the afternoon sun.

Design Tip: When working with heavy geometric focal dies like a ship's wheel, look for stencils with curved or intertwined lines (like the Rope Trellis) to soften the overall appearance and guide the viewer's eye straight to your cute character!

I hope this card inspires you to set sail on some new crafting adventures with the June Release! Don't forget to visit the store and use your discount code to stock up on these versatile new designs.
